School Spotlight

In 2005 40 students from Moranbah East State School joined J Rock for the very first time. This year, with over 55 students (including 15 boys), Moranbah East has decided that 2009 is their time to shine!

Moranbah East State School

Moranbah is a mining community 200km west of Mackay, Queensland. With just 8000 people in the town the opportunity to perform on stage is very limited, so many students join J Rock for the rare opportunities it provides them with.
During Terms 1 and 2, students from years 4 to 7 spent many lunchtimes and afternoons rehearsing their 2009 performance ?Circus of Dreams?. As well as their busy rehearsal schedule, the kids from Moranbah East also built a May Day Float for the town parade to help raise money (they came third!).

Each rehearsal saw the emergence of lions, poodles, clowns and even roustabouts! The students often ended up laughing so much that they didn?t get much practice in.

This all culminated with their performance at the Mackay Entertainment Centre in early June. The Moranbah East students had a great time, but were the only J Rock team at the event (although they did enjoy being told how ?cute? they were).

After the performance at Mackay Entertainment Centre, Moranbah?s local businesses got behind the team and the students are now going to travel over 1000km to perform at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre!

The screams of delight were heard all around the school when they were told about the offer. Even the thought of over 12 hours in a bus did not deter them.

The students are now working on remembering all their dances (although they practice them so much their teachers believe the steps are burned into their brains).

The students are now counting down the days 11, 10, 9, 8....1. Yeah, Brisbane, here we come!!!

Moranbah East State School will perform at Brisbane J Rock on Wednesday 29 July!

We are looking for schools to put under the spotlight all year long! If you would like to see your school featured on the School Spotlight page in 2009, please contact rcecil@rockchallenge.com.au
