They weren't cherry blossoms but the trees at Oxley Park Public School set the perfect scene for young samurai, geisha, and one US cavalry officer on Monday.
Students donned their costumes and got into character to show the Mt Druitt ? St Mary?s Standard what they had in store for today?s J Rock Eisteddfod heats at the Hills Centre for the Performing Arts at Castle Hill.
The students? eight minute dance routine is based on the Tom Cruise movie The Last Samurai.
It is the first time the school will participate in the event.
Teacher Jenny Turner choreographed more than 80 students who will be taking part.
She told the Standard it was a dream come true for her.
?This is the first time ? we?ve never done anything like this before (at the school),? she said.
?It?s been a dream of mine to do this. I?m an ex-Rock Eisteddfod student myself. I wanted to enlighten my students and give them some experience of what the eisteddfod offers.
?The kids have worked really hard and I think they?ll do us proud this week. They?ve worked their little hearts out.?
Mrs Turner said all teachers at the school contributed to support the students.
Students from years 1 to 6 spent three hours a week rehearsing at Colyton High School since the start of term 2.
They held a barbeque at Bunnings Minchinbury, baked cakes, held colour hair spraying and tattoo days at school, among other events, to raise money.
?(Teacher?s aide) Mrs Dolon and (mother) Mrs Jurisic spent many, many, many hours sewing all the costumes,? Mrs Turner said.
?Mrs Keepance also helped them but everyone?s been very supportive.
?Something like the Rock Eisteddfod teaches students dedication.
?There?s a goal out there and they have to work to get it.
?It?s good to see their dedication. I don?t think they realise how big it is until they finally get there though. I think it?s going to be awesome.?
